Understanding Complex Care and Challenging Behaviours

Caring for individuals with complex care needs and challenging behaviours can be a demanding and emotionally taxing task as it requires a deep understanding of their unique circumstances, as well as a compassionate and patient approach.

What is Complex Care?

Complex care refers to the provision of specialised medical, nursing, and social services to individuals with chronic or multiple health conditions that require ongoing management. These conditions can include physical disabilities, mental health disorders, cognitive impairments, and chronic diseases.

Challenging Behaviours

Challenging behaviours are considered any behaviours that can be disruptive, harmful, or socially inappropriate, such as:

    •    Aggression

    •    Self-injury

    •    Property damage

    •    Withdrawal

It's important to remember that challenging behaviours are often a way for individuals to communicate their needs, frustrations, or distress.

Positive Behavioural Support (PBS)

Positive Behavioural Support (PBS) is a tailored approach that focuses on understanding the function of challenging behaviours and developing strategies to promote positive outcomes. PBS involves:

  • Functional Behavioural Assessment (FBA): This involves identifying the triggers, consequences, and functions of a challenging behaviour. By understanding why a behaviour occurs, we can develop effective interventions.
  • Developing a Positive Behaviour Intervention Plan (BIP): Based on the FBA, a BIP is created to address the identified needs and provide strategies to promote positive behaviours.
  • Positive Reinforcement: Using rewards and incentives to encourage positive behaviours.
  • Environmental Modifications: Making changes to the environment to reduce the likelihood of challenging behaviours.
